The Tides

The Confluence of Multiple Forces

The Tides explores the effects of nature on man made materials, in this case foam. The Tides used "vortexes" and a "tide" as inputs in Maya to create a unique natural phenomenon that would affect the surface it was brought to bear. Associated Fabrication translated the appropriate deformations using their CNC mill onto the foam giving the material the protusions and indentations.

Due to the restrictions inherent in the mill, namely the inability to create undercuts, the inputs were tweaked to eliminate formations that would stump the CNC machine. Though these limits are noteworthy, nonetheless, CNC machines are amazing tools for tangibly visualizing complex 3D models created in Maya, Blender or any 3D program.

Future materials to represent project forces in nature include:

  • aluminum
  • wood
