T O P O L O G Y is a meditation on the word visualized in a three dimensional tangible form. The form is constructed with a Z-Corp CNC prototyping machine and isosurf.
Topology by definition in mathematics is the study of the properties of geometric figures or solids that are not changed by homeomorphisms, such as stretching or bending. For example, a donut is equivalent to a coffee cup, but not equivalent to basketball. T O P O L O G Y explores this relationship by extruding the individual letters of the word through planes that mimic the conditions of a donut or a basketball. The bombardment of these properties create a structure that is both aesthetically pleasing and mathematically complex. The use of isosurf allowed for these complex relationships to be visualized, and enhanced the possibilities of what might happen when certain conditions were imposed. Moreover, because the heavy mathematical lifting was left to isosurf, more consideration was given to the form and surface. T O P O L O G Y is the first in a series of 3-D forms created from the mix of interesting combination of letters and random planes.
